A piece of antique glass would definitely catch your eye even if it is in a room full of other ornate items. These exquisite pieces come in diverse shapes and sizes and add to the decor of your interiors. You can always buy an antique glass piece and use it as a showpiece. You will find every other visitor enquiring about it and asking where they will find one for their homes as well. The stained glass found in cathedrals is a classic example of such glass.

It is said that till the later years of the 18th century, glassware was not used for domestic purposes. Glass pieces that have existed for more than a period of 75 years are considered to be a part of the category of antique glass. Specialists in this business, however, prefer to call it ‘collectibles’ rather than antique.

There are others who differ in their opinion and believe that a piece of glass need not date back to antiquity to be regarded as an antique piece. Its value depends upon its make, its unique nature and its demand amongst the antique dealers as they are the ones who can distinguish between an authentic antique glass piece and any other ordinary glass like magnifying glass.

An antique glass is not necessarily a mirror or a crystal clear glass piece. Stained glass is a good example of this kind. A clear glass is a good choice as a collectible because when placed in a correct position, it makes unique patterns with light. With the beam of light passing the glass, it reflects on the ceiling and walls. This creates a beautiful aura and adds a depth to the room. On the contrary, a when the light bean passes through colored glass, the shimmer is dispersed in the room adding a different flavor to it.

Antique glass is not only available with an assortment of colors but it is also available for users in a variety of shapes and types. The most common type in the category of antique glass includes milk glass, carnival glass, Victorian glass, Depression glass, American pattern glass, pressed glass, art glass, historical glass, flint glass and opalescent glass. Each form has its own distinct features. Amongst these available varieties, the Flint glass and the American pattern glass are the most popular ones among users.

It is not difficult to search for antique glass pieces in present times, given the availability of online resources. There are a huge number of online stores that deal in such glass pieces. However, you need to be aware of the intricate details of such a piece of glass to get the best deals. It also helps to have information about the current market price.

Carnival glass is one of the most popular antique glass collectibles and comes in a wide variety of colors. The radiant exterior of the glass is due to the fact that it is colored with metallic salts at a time when it is hot and after which it is put back into the fire. This heating gives the glass its beautiful appearance. Though this form of glass was originally manufactured to be an expensive form, it did not become as popular as it was expected to be at that point of time.

Depression glass has also gained popularity as a form of antique glass. It was manufactured at the time of the Great Depression in the United States and therefore acquired its name from it. Macbeth Evans, Federal Glass and Hocking Glass were some of its key manufacturers and sold it at that time at a meager amount. It is mainly available in pink, green and blue colors. Its nominal price kept its sale on track even in the face of a severe financial crunch.

Since there are so many varieties available, choosing the right antique glass for your home collection becomes a tough job. Keeping them in a safe position is very important; one slip can cause a big loss. And be cautious while picking up the right piece. Else, instead of antique glass you may end up buying a magnifying glass for a fortune.
