Founded in 1831 in Rhode Island by Jabez Gorham, the Gorham Silver Company is known as one of America’s finest manufacturers of sterling silver and silver plate. Back in 1895 the famous designer William C. Codman, worked for the company and designed one of the company’s most famous silver patterns known as Chantilly. Even today this pattern remains one of the most popular. It’s one of the most requested patterns with brides who register their silver pattern at local stores. It’s also been passed down through generations from mothers and daughters.

The luster of this company’s silverware has caught the sight of even the White House administrations and has been asked for by Mary Todd Lincoln and Mrs. Ulysses S. Grant. On the special occasion of the 100th anniversary of the United States the company had proudly designed a sterling silver vase for Mrs. Grant. This silver vase contained more than 2,000 oz. of silver and was kept at the center of the display at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibit. The vase was had a height of 50 inches and a length of 62 inches. The design illustrated many scenes of the history of America on the face of it. It was displayed, in Paris and Chicago, but was eventually destroyed.

In their designs of silverware the company was prolific and a new pattern was created every few years. Gorham Silver stood distinctly apart when compared to all other silver makers in England. All over Europe Gorham turned out to be most recoginized for their flamboyant patterns and remarkable engraved details depicted in their dyes.

At the time of second World, weapons and other armaments were manufactured by the company to meet the demands of war. Actually, Gorham manufactured an array of shell casting for the Army and Navy.

Henry Jewett Furber (late) held the legendary gallery of the company’s silverwares. The gallery included tableware to the tune of 606 pieces and hollowware to the tune of 132 pieces. In 1949 the company bought back the collection. In that period of time the estimated valuation of the assortment was about $1 million dollars and in the recent time the market value would be much higher. The entire collection was donated by Gorham Silver and at present it is in the safe hands of the RISD Museum.

One of the most known monuments Gorham Silver designed, is the George Washington monument found in the rotunda of the Capitol. They also designed a statue of Theodore Roosevelt and it can currently be found in New York overlooking the Museum of Natural History. Rhode Island’s state house is domed by the famous statue of the “Independent Man”, another company creation.

Recently, the company had provided the flatware service to Air Force One which was asked for by the family of George W. Bush and the pattern they had chosen was none other than Chantilly. The company also crafted the splendid trophies for two sporting actions: the Borg-Warner Trophy and the Indianapolis 500 trophy.

Currently Gorham Silver has diversified into other areas, such as the production of dinnerware. Their china patterns are versatile yet still delicate and of the highest quality. Having a reputation of impressive designs and quality products has made this company one of the most prominent in the production of fine dinnerware.

From the start of history, individuals have produced jewelry out of things found in the natural world. Almost everything from minerals, plants, shells, and of course metals such as platinum and silver, however just one may astonish you... coins.
Post from: www.mccoy-pottery.net

History of Coin Jewelry

Since the beginning of history, people have made jewelry out of stuff picked up in the natural environment. Everything from minerals, plants, shells, and of course metals such as platinum and silver, but just one may well amaze you… money in the form of coins.

Coin jewelry is not new. In fact, there exists archaeological evidence of coins getting cut and punctured from olden days. From the beginning of metal money, coins were often drilled or pierced as a functional feature in order to be worn round the neck or attached to an item of clothing.

Right now, there are several methods to the ways that coin jewelry is done, however the primary 2 techniques are whole and cut coins. In cut coin jewelry, the coin is changed in some manner by cutting, pounding, shaping, or drilling it. Whole coin jewelry essentially endeavors to protect the original coin simply by keeping it in place using the jewelry bezels.

It is legitimate to say that old coins can be irrevocably damaged by coin jewelry making, but the final item is usually so lovely that the price is really a lot more valuable than the initial coin most of the time. For example, take the lowly penny. The penny is merely really worth just one cent, yet can be turned into a piece of artwork which is worth a lot more. Almost all coin jewelry will undergo wear because they are worn as a result of friction, oils and salt in epidermis, along with other kinds of degradation.

Obviously, we recommend that you utilize coins that aren’t so uncommon that the sacrifice of using them for coin jewelry significantly exceeds the aesthetic worth of the piece. Nevertheless, remember that preserving coins by means of jewelry is a method to showcase the artistry and artwork of the actual pieces themselves. The truth is it will give you a way to connect oneself with the historic importance of these coins. As an example, in case you are a Civil War buff, then you may well think it is very appealing to put on a necklace having US half dollar from 1861.

There are many ways that you can take coins, and use them as jewelry decoration. They are often formed into rings, bracelets, earrings, money clips, tie tacks & bars, cufflinks, ankle bracelets, and much more!

While it usually is accurate that producing jewelry out of coins produces scarcity of coins themselves, it is also accurate it also improves the appeal of the coins. The appreciation level is not as elevated as when a coin piece is stuck away from you in a drawer somewhere.

The American silver has been the symbol of the United States since it began. They are testament to strength that has lasted over two hundred years. The American silver dollar is the cornerstone of many coin collections and collectors everywhere. Not only are they beautiful, have have a very rich historical value.

Silver has always been a form of currency that has stable valve and is transportable. Gold coins are too small for their worth and copper has been too cheap. This has made silver the preferred coin metal of trade around the world and America has always minted silver dollars. These large, round pieces of metal actually started out being worth their weight in silver, being more than 90% pure silver very soon after the American revolution ended. The earliest American silver dollars were stamped from hand engraved dies so there was a lot of variation of design from coin to coin. These changes appeal to collectors.

Gold lost it’s value to silver soon after the early 1800s. Old silver dollars were being liquidated to trade for gold and gold coins. There was a stoppage of the minting of American silver dollars until this monetary crisis evened out. The price of silver dropped to more sane levels in 1835. At that time, the mint started to strike silver dollars once again. A new design was called for and the famous Liberty silver dollar made its appearance.

The new design was by Christian Gobrecht called the Seated Liberty silver dollar. The Liberty design was an instant hit with the American public and was soon struck on nearly every coin in the country. The seated Liberty silver dollar was in circulation until being replaced by the Morgan silver dollar in 1878. Because of the large silver strikes in the Mother Lode of the West, Morgans were soon everywhere causing the value of silver to plummet. Washington soon passed legislation, pushed by powerful silver mine owners, making it a law that every banknote in the United States had to back its face value in the form of silver. The Morgan silver dollar was therefore minted in very large numbers leading to their ease of collection in the 1900s.

Morgan silver dollars are the easiest and most satisfying coin to collect. These big coins were struck for so long at five different U.S. mints, giving them many variants of date and series. They are easily the best way for a beginning collector to start.

Coin collecting with the Internet has never been easier. you can find everything you want, American silver eagle silver dollars, Eisenhower silver dollars and lots of uncirculated silver dollars at your own computer by just visiting some websites. What could be easier for beginning collectors or even someone with an established collection. The excitement of collecting can also bring joy with a growing investment in silver dollars.

Especially with the world’s uncertain economy and the rising value of silver, this is one of the best times to start an American silver dollar collection for your enjoyment and your future.

Five thousand year old designs from Celtic civilization have found its way to the contemporary sterling silver Celtic ring collection. The Celts as a whole were surrounded by a kind of spirituality which was totally puzzling.

Symbolism in jewelry was a prominent part of this unique early culture. Todays jewelry artists have drawn inspiration from these age old designs and produced amazingly artistic sterling silver Celtic rings for the new generation.

This is how the most popular Celtic sterling silver ring looks like which you will find in the stores. The most famous is the Celtic knot which was the part of the traditionalestablished Celtic culture. The ring possesses complex Celtic knot with spiral impression.

A sparkling diamond stands at the middle of the ring adding some shine to this classic Celtic ring. The ring has a 7mm width and weighs in at 2.0g.

This traditionally motivated Celtic ring is one of the hot favorites mainly amongst those ladies whose men have gone overseas. The ribbon on the ring is meant to serve as a constant reminder for the wearer regarding their commitment to their absent man.

The ring further features the eternal Celtic trinity love knot which is artistically offset with a glistering row of diamonds. The ring weighs in at 2.0g.

This is an exceptionally stylish ring inspired by Celtic traditions. It features an intricate inset double trinity knot design. This exclusive ring actually makes use of both silver and gold.

The combination actually works wonders and the whole ring comes across as a brilliant modern take on an ancient theme.

The trinity knot shoulder on simple silver brand makes this Celtic sterling silver ring absolutely unparalleled. An agate of oval shape is added to the heart of the ring. The agate is enclosed within a cluster of eight cubic zirconias.

This special ring is supposed to be outstanding with its trinity knot design. An arithmetical principle which shows no beginning and no end is taken to design this ring. This special Celtic symbol is assumed to signify the age old Celtic culture of triple Gods.

As we have seen the sterling silver Celtic rings are a ideal blend of contemporary and ancient culture which strongly believed in spiritualism and symbolism. If you wish to have something out of the ordinary the ring is a great choice.

There are a wide vairety of silver rings available in the market these days. If you want to go for something different, perhaps silver celtic rings is just right for you.
The American silver has been the symbol of the United States since it began. They are testament to strength that has lasted over two hundred years. The American silver dollar is the cornerstone of many coin collections and collectors everywhere. Not only are they beautiful, have have a very rich historical value.

From the beginning of the modern age, silver has become one of the major metals for world trade. Gold coins are very precious and brass or copper not valuable enough. Silver has the perfect balance of rareness and worth to make it the coin of trade around the world. The United States has always minted silver dollars since the end of the American revolution. The first old silver dollars were nearly ninety percent silver and were pressed from hand made dies giving them a hand made look that is loved by collectors.

As the years passed, prices of silver climbed and far outpaced the value of gold. American silver dollars were being refined and melted to exchange for gold. This forced the American mint to stop striking silver dollars until things turned around in 1835. The silver exchange eventually settled down and silver priced dropped. There was a renewed call for the silver dollar. This brought the advent of the Liberty silver dollars.

Christian Gobrecht designed the first seated Liberty silver dollar. This design proved to be so popular with all Americans that it soon appeared on almost all coins of that day. Seated Liberty silver dollars were replaced in 1878 by the Morgan silver dollar. Morgans were struck at such a high number, thanks to the silver strikes in the West, that there was soon a glut of silver and silver dollars, driving their value lower. The owners of the silver mines lobbied Washington to require every banknote in the country to be backed by silver to protect its worth. This led to the huge number of Morgan silver dollars circulating during the mid 1900s.

Morgan silver dollars are the easiest and most satisfying coin to collect. These big coins were struck for so long at five different U.S. mints, giving them many variants of date and series. They are easily the best way for a beginning collector to start.

These days with the advent of the Internet coin collecting is very easy. Any collector can find American silver eagle dollars, Eisenhower silver dollars and even uncirculated proof sets without having to leave home. This has made it a snap for beginning collectors as well as seasoned pros. The joy and excitement of coin collecting can also be a smart investment.

With the rising value of all precious metals around the globe, there has seldom been a better time for investing in American silver dollars.

With the rising value of all precious metals around the globe, there has seldom been a better time for investing in American silver dollars.

Coin collector aficionados consider the American Silver Eagle coins sets a valuable addition to their collection. Though many consider the Eagle coins a collector’s item across the world, only the staunchest collectors know that it is made off the purest legal silver in the history of the United States.

The coins come in a size that makes them easily portable, and the owners can transport them conveniently. This is by far the most appealing aspect of the American Silver Eagle coin collection.

Secondly American silver eagle coins have universal liquidity which makes them valuable all around the world. Furthermore it has a government guaranteed status which acts as another plus point.

The worth of silver eagle coins is high but how do you compare them with other collectible coins. Their worth differs in that these coins are not antique.

This collector’s item is a young issue and has been in circulation for only 20 years.

Individuals interested in adding silver eagle coins to their collections need to be aware of the place where they were minted and when they were minted. You also need to know about the available mint marks and have a good comprehension of the coin finishes.

The Silver Eagle coin collection is available only for collectors and not meant for market circulation and trading. They can be purchased straight from the US mint.

Earlier when the silver eagle coins were launched, individuals were not allowed to purchase from the mint. Instead they had to purchase from certified coin dealers or precious metals manufacturers.

This is perhaps one of the most sought after silver eagle coins by collectors. The 1955 silver eagle is part of the first limited edition set of coins. The set also had the 1995-W Proof American Silver Eagle which was not available by itself in the market.

The set included the American gold coin in one ounce, half ounce, quarter ounce and the tenth coin. This complete set was available at a tag lower than 1000 dollars and only 125 sets were produced.

The fact that the American eagle coin collection is guaranteed by the government gives the collector an assurance regarding the purity, value and weight of the coins in question. These coins are loaded by hand into the coin press and then they were stuck on specially burnished blanks that had the special mint mark for each coin.

With over one 130 million pieces circulating in the market since 1986 today the American Silver Eagle coin is a leading collectors item. It is globally recognized as the bestseller due to the fact that it is made of 100% pure silver guaranteed by the government.

The Franklin Mint Company in Middletown Pennsylvania is a world famous company and the Franklin mint silver coin is a renowned collectible item. This company functions as a private corporation and was established in the 1960s.

The company was started by Joseph Segal who launched quite a few collectibles under the corporate brand name. For Americans it is considered a staple American brand, and is sought after by lower income classes.

The company began marketing its privately minted silver and gold commemorative medallions and rounds. Soon enough it branched out and started producing other various kinds of collectible items.

However in the 1960s there was a shop in pleasing the value of Silver in the global market and it was removed from circulation in the domestic market. At this point casinos were using the silver dollar in slot machines but now the silver dollar was worth more than its actual value.

To its credit the Franklin mint silver coin became the first official replacement of the US silver dollar coin to be used as slot machine tokens.

The Franklin mint factory in Pennsylvania had a production facility that could manage production of large quantity of coins, theme based medallions, and ingots. Those interested in Franklin mint collectibles could subscribe to a shipment plan and receive unique collectible items as per the plan.

Although Franklin Mint silver coins are the most popular of all the company’s productions, silver was not the only medium used by the company. In fact the company ventured into producing exclusive coin-like collectibles out of various precious and semi-precious metals.

These extensions to the range are often theme based and used the classic are masterpieces to create different appealing designs. Some of the products even feature renowned and popular personalities.

These moderately priced coins caused a collectors flurry in purchase as they were priced competitively in terms of the cost of silver.

To increase the purchase price and get a better profit the Franklin mint company created customized wooden boxes to showcase the coins in a better way and make them more appealing. Special certificates authentication are also issued with each piece thereby enhancing the value of the purchase.

Of course the company met its objective of driving up the purchase price, this was around the same time as the cost of silver rose in the local and domestic markets.

The company then had to make use of pewter and bronze to make their products more affordable for the masses. But naturally pewter and bronze did not have the same effect on the collectors as did silver and hence the new line of collectibles did not become as popular as Franklin Mint silver coins.

Antique silver forms many sought after items especially for those who have a fascination for rare artifacts. Antiques are available in a variety of forms and shapes including furniture, books, toys, glass and many other brilliant collectibles but probably the most popular amongst all is antique silver. It includes silver coins, jewelry like rings ,earrings and watches, silver-ware and much more.

The most common source of Antique Silver has to be the royal and noble families of yesteryears. Silverware was a staple in these families and today, exquisite silver articles such as plates, bowls, cutlery etc can be found for sale. Most of these showcase wonderful craftsmanship and are generally stamped with the family crest. Even though with the advent of electroplating technology silverware has become accessible to the common man today, such examples of old silver are still valued for their exclusivity.

Antique silver items are relatively commonplace in the antique market. However, it is important to possess some idea of the style and patterns of the available ones. There are hundreds of distinct style and patterns present in the market. To make a selection amongst them is really difficult. Moreover, authentication of a genuine silver piece is very important. You should make sure to look for the ‘hallmark’ that can provide you the information regarding the designer and the origin.

Fortunately, when it comes to Antique Silver, signs are commonly prevalent. Basically, when you look out for old silverware, you are not looking at modern electroplated silver but sterling silver objects. Since such objects generally come with the maker’s name embossed, they are much easier to locate if you are looking for such antiques.

Are you wondering about how to distinguish antique silver from the usual ones? Well you can opt for an acid test by your jeweler that will cost you a small amount. In addition, there are certain tips to test silver. First of all do not use a touchstone, test the silver piece yourself. Scuff or lightly scratch a minute spot underneath and then you should apply Nitric Acid on that spot. If the color changes to cloudy grey then it is a sterling silver and if it turns to black then it is Coin silver. If it turns to green it indicates that the item is plated.

Antique silver ware and sterling silver pieces exhibit a couple of distinctive properties. The stored value of these objects attracts all those who are interested in collecting antique silver items. As a collector, you will not only enjoy the utility, beauty and aesthetics but also the financial dividends. It is a type of asset that benefits collectors and investors against currency devaluation and inflation.

Antique Silver jewelry is also abundant and has been a regular favorite of collectors over time. Such jewelry may include many items such as a ring, a pair of earrings or something as exclusive as a silver watch. Silver bracelets have also been very popular as jewelry items. In fact, in the olden days, the concept of a “Lucky Charm Bracelet” made of silver was also very popular, especially in the upper strata of society. Such bracelets were usually encrusted with gems and form a wonderful collector’s item today.

You can come across antique silver while dealing with old coins. Collection of coins is a popular hobby but the one that features such antique pieces definitely gives the owner a high. Chinese antique coins, Roman antique coins and American antique coins form a part of this list of valuables.

Just acquiring an antique silver piece for your collection is not sufficient. You need to take adequate care of them. Preserve them in a different place as they are vulnerable to corrosion, scratches and dents. It is necessary that you clean antique silver with a soft cloth to ensure prolonged use.
