Anime has seen an accompanying rise in demand as its popularity grows unabated throughout the world. It is rare to see each new spring without a number of new anime series making their debuts on television as they seek to fulfill the fans’ craving for more. While this helps to affirm the companies’ passion for the genre, it does not come without problems.

The main issue now for anime series which originate from Japan is the pace at which the production companies are able to meet demand from international fans. Most of these fans do not understand the Japanese language. As a result, to cater to viewers, the anime series have to be translated or dubbed in English or a language that has an audience.

This job of translation is not the forte of Japanese though. They also still prefer to cater to their local fanbase first and foremost, thus resulting in a distinct lack of ability to meet the demand. In order to deal with this issue, most of them have turned to production companies in the United States or Britain to provide translation in various forms.

Doing so results in three different ways the anime series are packaged for international audiences. The first is to provide subtitles with the video. The second is to dub the series in English or some other language in demand. And the third is a combined package of the two.

The three methods have their own set of respective fans. However, there are compelling reasons that call for the use of subtitles with anime series that would better target positive response and sales on the international stage.

While international anime fans will not know the Japanese language unless they have learned it, the demand for their anime to be in original Japanese audio is strong. It allows them to feel the natural emotions conveyed by the original voice actors. If voice dubbing were to be used, they might find it come across as strange and unnatural.

Anime fans might also be students of the language. Thus, they would prefer having subtitles that can either help or avoid being impaired by the lack of Japanese audio. They can improve their listening skills while using the subtitles as a learning guide in understanding.

Thus, with subtitles, anime can become a powerful medium for the purpose of spreading Japan’s culture and language. English-dubbed anime will always have its place, but they face limitations in conveying the truest emotions in anime. The former can only be more fun for both fans, hobbyists and language enthusiasts.
