You could go round the shops or have a look online just to find the same mass produced furniture. That is OK, but that might not really have any character or uniqueness. Alternatively, what about some older or antique pieces. Rule of thumb is that antiques are 100 years old or more. I think antique pieces bought at the right money are good value, as when you have your new furniture delivered some of the money value has gone directly away.

We started our little business by chance. I had repaired some furniture and sold it locally but that’s just a hobby, you could not really live on it. We went to newark antiques fare about 10 years ago and met some dutch traders and found their furniture good, but obviously in need of a few repairs as it was being sold to the trade.Next came the rented space in an antiques centre and the coming of eBay, and it then became a fine part time job. The website came on well and developed up the Google rankings which made it full time business.

I only deal in antique pine furniture, here is an example of how to restore an old pine chest of drawers. You could buy a chest of drawers from the local auction for around $125. You should be able to get it stripped for about $40 pounds and then see what you have got, and with a bit of luck the carcass will be OK.If you have to start changing tops or sides, oh dear!

Probably you will need to change the feet. I sometimes make a plinth around the bottom say 1/2 inch thick which gives it strength as you fix the bottom to the sides and back. If timber has been slightly wormy this gives a good fixing for the feet. If the original carcass was made of planked timber and you get a get a split, cut a strip of timber to fit the gap and glue it in. You can sand it up and colour the new piece later.

Now put your hand on the top of the chest and rock it side to side, oh god it’s all moving around! We need to nail the back section up, top and bottom, as the back is in sections to allow it to move but the nails have may have gone to rust and need to be replaced. Drawer runners will need to be repaired, you have to square up the bottom edge and make a strip of timber and fix it to the bottom of the drawer, same with the runner on the carcass on all of the drawers. This fixes the problem of when you pull out the drawer it only drops down instead of sliding out. OK now sand it all up and replace the handles, because there is bound to be one missing. If you have locks to repair get the blank keys from a dealer and file them to suit. Only got to wax now, three coats and polish and it is done, perfect!

Another good tip is replace a missing knot by shaping down a broom handle with a knife tap it into the hole and saw off the excess flat.

The times have changed. In earlier times people used to have a separate dining room. This was meant for the whole family to dine together. It could be a great hall with a huge capacity in the houses of aristocrats and affluent people. They used to have large tables with many chairs where not just the family members, but also the guests would also find ample space for dining. The transition to modern world dining room resulted in a small space somewhere beside kitchen kept for dining purposes. In the modern times, it is rare that the whole family dines together. Hence we now rarely find the long dining tables and chairs anymore. Rather a set that would suffice the needs of the house members is much more common.
Post from: www.mccoy-pottery.net

Changing Dining Chairs To Change The Face Of Dining Rooms

The times have changed. In early times people used to have a separate dining room. This was meant for the whole family to dine together. It could be a good hall with a large capacity in the houses of aristocrats and affluent people. They used to have large tables with numerous chairs where not really just the family members, but also the guests would also find ample space for dining. The transition to modern world dining room resulted in a little space somewhere beside kitchen kept for dining purposes. In the modern times, it is rare that the whole family dines together. Hence we now rarely find the long dining tables and chairs anymore. Rather a set that would suffice the needs of the house members is much more common.

Choose your dinning set from a variety of options available:

There are a lot of varieties of dining chairs open in the market. You can select one that matches your d?cor of the house. You can pick the finished wood chairs. They are fairly classy in their looks and have many lacquers associated with them. If you want something ethnic and traditional, then you can opt for the unfinished wooden chairs. They add the complete traditional look which can match to your other antiques placed in the room. Their rustic look makes them trendy and popular at all times of the year.

The modern fabric chairs can also be great choice for dining purposes. The fabric chairs come with cushions in the seat as nicely as in the back portion of the chair. There can be a big variety of chairs open based on the quality of cushions which can be either silk or velvet. You can also get some latest design and styles of chairs to complete the perfect modern look for your dining set. Then you can pick chairs with arms or without arms, depending on your needs. These chairs also come in lively colors. So you get to select the one of your choice that matches with the color of your room.

Focus on the comfort along with the style element while buying chairs

The comfort level that the dining chairs will provide shall be your utmost priority while selecting the chairs. After all, keep in mind that you and your loved ones will be eating while sitting on this chair. If you have children at your home then your choice of colors of the chair should be among the darker shades. This will make it easier for you to clean them and help them become less dirty. Also emphasize on the right type of the cushions for your chairs. You can afford to have a small and decent dining set rather than a set that is extravagantly lavish but zero on comfort level.

Conclusion:

Selecting a chair for dining purposes can be a complicated task. You need to manage style and comfort, both. After all, this can affect the ordinary dining of your loved ones. You can try to pick these chairs in individual numbers or get a set of them. The choice will depend on your taste as nicely as the other furniture placed in your dining area.

There are a lot of different things between the general clocks and the ones which features a pendulum for the movement of time. These pendulum wall clocks can give you the antique and classic look even if they are brand new and made of the latest materials and style.

If you are looking for a genuine pendulum clock that is really old then get ready to empty your bank accounts because they are very pricey. Some can even go back to the 17th century.

One of the single most crucial thing about these pendulum clocks is that the pendulum is always made from wood or in which case any material that is not affected by the temperature.

The pendulum operates and controls the winding movement of the clock so any change to the pendulum, especially length would result in the quickening or delay of the time shown. This is the reason why metal is not used to make the pendulum as when temperature drops or climbs, the length would differ and cause the time shown to be inaccurate.

Another thing is that the pendulum wall clocks can’t be used in a moving place; it should be stand still in order to be able to calculate time accurately. This means that you cannot use this type of clocks in a boat or yacht decoration and when you have it in home, do not attempt to move it and if it happens then you need to readjust the clock again.

Purchasing a pendulum wall clock is actually fairly simple if you are looking to buy a contemporary one but if you are looking for the genuine old models then your only shot would be to buy an antique.

If you are buying a new pendulum clock then all you need to do is to choose from between the different models offered in the market and if you have a good budget then you can go for a designer pendulum clock that offers a different level of quality.

Getting antique clocks is a sensitive process because there are a lot of frauds that can occur during such process. There are some factors that you should keep your consideration when you are buying such type of old clocks. In the beginning, you should know that the value of an antique clock is determined according to several factors.

First of all, the age of the clock. The clocks that dated back to the 17th century or those that commemorate certain important occasions are considerably higher in value compared to the ordinary or latest clocks. If you are seriously considering purchasing an antique wall clock be prepared to fork out as much money as the historical value of the clock.

The second factor is the maker of the clock. Antique wall clocks always have the signature or the name of the clock maker. When you check antique clocks make sure that the name or the signature engraved on it is genuine because it could be forged easily.

Make sure to compare the signature to another genuine clock of the same maker to get a better judgment. If the seller is asking for a huge price then it is better to get an expert to assess it for you.

The third factor is where you are buying your antique wall clocks. If you are dealing with a seller then run a quick search about him on the internet or if you are dealing with auction house then it is better to ask some experts to know if they sell genuine items or not.

Do not leave out the guarantee offered by the seller too. It is very important and you should never be satisfied with a verbal guarantee. Always put everything as black and white, the more important it is when you are paying a lot of money for the clock.

To find legitimate, genuine and artful antique wall clocks, just go to PerfectWallClocks.com for all the tips, guides and reviews you require to purchase the ideal wall clock like the pendulum wall clocks.

Aside from its purchasing power ancient Roman Republic coins were also utilized to convey a meaning or relate an idea through their designs or inscriptions. The entire Roman state was the first image that appeared on the coins during the Roman Republic in 150-100 BC. Tresviri monetales or often regarded as the ‘trio of money men’, decided what images to feature on the coins. Julius Caesar increased the number of tresviri monetales from three to four during the end of the Republic. However the position of these men only lasted until the middle of the third century AD.

The earliest denarius was adorned with the bust of Roma on the obverse, and a deity driving a biga or quadriga on the reverse. These coins occasionally exhibited control marks such as small symbols, or monograms that were used to indicate who was responsible for a certain coin. Abbreviated forms of the moneyer’s name replaced the monograms and other symbols. Coins of Sextus Pompeius Fostulus portray images that display the family history of moneyers. The number of references multiplied and the depictions became the focus of the current interest.

During the Roman Republic there was a cut throat rivalry among the rulers to promote their own image on the coins. The height of rivalry amongst the higher class people was illustrated by Lex Gabinia, which commenced secret ballots in the elections so as to bring down electoral corruption. The messages was meant for the privileged and not to pressure the average citizen.

The Roman Republic Denarius weighing 3.878g and measuring 20.5mm was released by L.Valerius Flaccus, during 108-107 BC. A figure of the bust of Victory with wings and a nice dress on the front side and the figure of Mars holding a trophy in left hand and spear in the right hand were adorned on the obverse of the coin.

The Roman Republic coins released by M.Porcius Laeca, during 125 BC, each had a weight of around 3.768g and a width of 18.3 mm, depicted the Roma in a winged helmet on the head and Libertas, holding rod and pileus in a running quadriga on the tail of the coin.

This Roman Republic coin, L. Caecilius Metellus, 128 B.C., shows the head of Roma facing right in a winged helmet on the front, while Pax or Juno is in a biga facing right and an elephant head with bell at the neck below on the reverse. This coin weighs .788g, with a maximum diameter of 18.9mm.

During 108-107 BC, the ancient Roman Republic 7 and 8 denarius coin, displaying a combined and laureate headed Dioscuri on the front and a portrait of a galley under oar on the back side was issued by Mn.Fonteius. The weight and diameter of these coins were 3.880g and 19.9mm respectively.

Numerous designs of ancient Roman Republic coins are found in the market today. These coins possess a great investment value as thier prices will certainly rise in the future. Having these coins in a is a means of treasuring the history of an ancient civilization.

Lord of the Rings swords found in the book and movie series can now be purchased as replicas. While they vary in size they still tend to be of high quality and, of course, faithful reproductions of those weapons you may have seen or read of. However beyond whatever quality they may have, they may also be looked upon as art or at least pieces that stir conversation.

It is nothing new to be an avid reader or enthusiast for a particular series of books or even movies. In this case the Lord of the Rings saga has a long and avid following. It is natural for many of those enthusiasts to want to see their interests realized in the form of swords or knives used by characters. Hanging them upon walls or other places of honor within your home not only lets you do this, but can also interest others.

The imagination and effort put into the reproduction of a Lord of the Rings sword can make it stand out. Naturally it is rare to see a weapon at all similar to them. Some of them can easily be considered beautiful and even thought provoking. Having this kind of conversation piece in your home can be a way of expressing yourself and your interests to others.

At the very least having a physical representation of a story you may have loved very much can help to remember it. By continuing to hold the epic tale of the fellowship with you through this item can be a means of remember what it meant to you. Thus, again, these objects can approach a level of art. Through the evocation of emotions or memories of the stories, that is.

Finding the right sword might be difficult of course. You can try to think of a part of the story you most enjoyed where a weapon was involved. Or more likely you can think of a particular character whom you wish to remember. Possessing a replica of their personal sword can be an excellent way of doing this.

Remembering these words may help you consider whether such a sword is in your interest to seek. Of course you may also wish to think of whether a friend or family member who loves Lord of the Rings may enjoy one as well. Hopefully your consideration has been made a bit easier through this article. Good luck.

But before you do it, consider whether or not you want to change the feel of your dining room and how. Is it very comfortable if you are going to be sitting there for a long period of time?

Have you been considering making a change to the way your dining room currently looks? A lot of people think they want to change the look of the dining room. But before you do it, consider whether or not you want to change the feel of your dining room and how. When was the last time you really sat in antique dining chairs in your dining room and considered how it feels? Is it as supportive as you would like it to be? Is it extremely comfortable if you are going to be sitting there for a long period of time? If you answered no to either of these questions then perhaps in addition to wanting a new look to your dining room furniture, you’ll want to consider the feel of a antique dining chair before you buy it.

The good news is that you can feel free to go all out and pick a antique dining chair that is lush and luxurious. This is one of the design trends of the year. Luxury and flamboyance as well as indulgence are in for home furnishings. So now it is time to figure out what you want to buy. Start with considering the frame of the chair. You should make sure it’s going to be a comfortable perch. Began reading up on how the chair has been constructed. You want to know that you have solid construction at the base of this chair. Knowing the chair has been built well, and will hold you up securely, will allow you to initially be much more comfortable in this seat.

Next, it is time to take a closer look at the seat of the chair. After all, this is where you’re going to be perched while enjoying a meal. What material is the seat made out of? How much cushioning is there on top of the base material? What type of fabric is being used to hold it all together? All these questions are going to come together to create either a comfortable or uncomfortable sitting experience for you. Read up on what types of materials are being used and what kind of seating comfort should be achieved from this particular type of chair seats.

The next thing you have to consider in any antique dining chair is whether or not you want armrests. Many people like the idea of armrests because they allow you to rest your arms without making an etiquette faux pas, of putting arms on the table. Appealing armrests can also add a gorgeous decorative touch to a set of antique dining chairs. But there is one thing you need to consider as you look at armrests.

You need to know the width of the chair. If you have chairs that are not exceptionally broad, with armrests, you may run into some issues. Larger members of the family may be extremely uncomfortable getting in or out of these particular chairs. No one wants to sit into a chair that is constantly cutting into his or her side throughout the entire meal.

The author has written more about antique kitchen chairs and antique dining chairs on his site, check them out: antique kitchen chairs and http://www.antiquediningchairs.net/black-leather-chair.

Vintage oil cans, otherwise known as petroliana, were considered trash not too long ago. But these days, they’re collector’s items and are sought all over the internet! There are so many types to be found and while they’re still a bit easy to come by, they’re not too expensive and are a fun kind of collection.

You can find them all over the place, from your local trash heap to abandoned garages. Just make sure that while you’re ‘treasure hunting’ you’ve gotten permission! Nothing ruins a good treasure hunt like a fine for trespassing. You can also bid for them over the internet but a lot of people think of that as half the fun gone.

The unusual vintage oil cans are the stuff of collector lore. Many a tale has been told of how that unique can came into their possession and sometimes it involves a wild chase with the junkyard dog or two. Cans with mascots or cans with names of companies that do not exist anymore, these are the stuff that collectors want.

Vintage oil cans that are unopened, or with mascots, unusual names, or names of defunct companies are the material of collector’s dreams. Just one could go for a very high price, if the collector would be willing to part with it, that is.

You can sell your finds on the net if you want or you can use them to add a little bit of nostalgia to your room. They can be used as decorations (think Andy Warhol for this) and maybe spark some memories for the older generation when they come to visit. After all, what’s good old America without the car and the drive down the lane?

Thyui has written quite some works. Some of his most updated articles on vintage oil cans are published and can be read at vintageoilcans.net. Articles on this topic are all nice and easy to read.
