In 1982 a couple of shoppers began struggling in a retail store to be the one to purchase the last Cabbage Patch doll on the shelf. They were both injured. And the craze about collecting Cabbage Patch Dolls began.
Xavier Roberts was the creator of this doll, its story, and the strange phenomenon that followed. In Cleveland, Georgia, the birthplace of the myth and the doll, he wrote of a stunning waterfall behind which a cabbage patch grew dolls, and the story took off.
All the hype was about the adoption of these dolls, as compared to a simple purchase. They were sold with adoption papers to the owner, and it was all taken rather seriously. One could even be expecting one of these dolls, if ordered ahead of time, and prepare for its arrival.
These baby dolls could be ordered with the desired hair style and color, and length, as well. Or, if the child wanted a bald doll, that was alright, too. Eye color was also chosen, as well as skin colors, like latte, mocha, cream, or espresso. The birth certificate included the name given to it, as well as the birth date.
And you could join one of the many collectors clubs. You would receive a membership card, a collectors pin, a binder for newsletters, and there was a private tour of the birth place of these dolls.
And other events and conventions were also held through the years.
And the craze has not ended. These baby dolls can still be ordered on line in the present day. You would still be able to choose the eye and hair color, skin tone, and they still come with a birth certificate with a chosen name and date of birth. Today they sell for $350.00 each, along with shipping, and tax if you are a Georgia resident. So if you think that collecting Cabbage Patch Dolls is over, think again.
