An antique can be defined as an old collectible item. It is collected or considered desirable because of its age, condition, rarity, utility or other features which are unique to it. It is a representative of a bygone era in human civilization.

Many antiques are considered collectible due to their high degrees of craftsmanship and attention to detail that give antiques their unique identity. Many early automobiles and furniture pieces like chairs, tables and desks are good examples of antiques. Antiques are often passed down through families. In recent times, antique and vintage styles have made a comeback. So much so that vintage and old fashioned styles are being incorporated into new items. Sometimes it is difficult to tell the difference between the new and old versions of something in an antique style. Vintage and antique items have the appeal of memorabilia and also can be antiques of tomorrow. Value of antiques will typically grow.

The antiques of tomorrow can include furniture, dolls, fabrics and other items. Their particular characteristics make the antique furniture a particularly popular item of collection. Dining tables, chairs, bureaus, chests are examples of antique furniture. The commonly used woods are oak, mahogany, pine, rosewood and walnut. Elm wood is the most common variety used in Chinese antique furniture. These woods are marked by their distinctive colour and grain. Some modern furniture pieces use wood veneer or laminate to achieve a similar effect, but in a cheaper way. Styles of antique furniture differ depending on where and when they were made. Some common examples of such furniture are Georgian, Arts & Crafts, Victorian and regency.
